47.0108, 8.3314Kastanienbaum is one of those destinations people know well but rarely photograph — which is a shame, because it’s well worth it. The small village sits right on the southern shore of Lake Lucerne, less than twenty minutes from the city, and offers one of the most relaxed views of the Central Swiss mountain backdrop.
The walk starts at the lakeshore, where the water glitters in the morning light. From there it climbs gently through woods and meadows. In the background the Rigi, Pilatus, and — on a clear day — the entire chain of the Alps.
In September the area takes on its first autumn colours while temperatures are still pleasant. Perfect conditions for photos that show more mood than spectacular drama.
Practical tips
- → Get there by bus from Lucerne (line 20 towards Horw/Kastanienbaum) – no car needed.
- → The best light is in the morning: the lake mirrors the mountains before the wind picks up.
- → The path along the shore offers calm water reflections – ideal for long exposures.
- → September and October are the loveliest months: the hills turn colour without fog spoiling the view.
- → From the hills above the village you get an open view of the Rigi, Pilatus and the city of Lucerne.
